Hello my beautiful readers, welcome back to my blog. As you can read from the title, in today's post I wanted to talk about the plague of 21st century 'DEPRESSION & ANXIETY' and my own experience with it.
I have been meaning to write this post for a long time but I was under impression that in today's world where almost every person is going through anxiety and depression, it wouldn't be hard to notice the signs but I was wrong, last night I was talking to a friend of mine and realized that Depression, even after being a serious matter doesn't get talked about enough and most people doesn't even know that they're going through it.
Feeling sad from time to time about something is completely normal, we are all humans and we all have our bad days but when this sadness becomes constant and you can't really point out a reason for it then it's something to pay attention to.
It took me a while to understand the same, with the help of internet i think I've gained a bit knowledge which I can share with you and help you guys to identify this and cure it in due time and honestly as an Influencer, I feel it's my duty to talk to you about my own journey and help you notice the basic signs to understand whether or not you're going through depression.
First of all, there's no particular reason for being Depressed, It can happen to anyone, most of the times you won't even know what triggers it, you can feel depressed while you’re just living your everyday life, doing nothing particularly special or unusual, and all of a sudden you are unable to function. Nothing seems to matter. It feels like you're stuck in a black pit and its just getting darker each passing day, like you'll never be able to come out of it and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
No body likes to feel this way, trust me I have been there and it's the worst I have ever felt.
People often tend to get confused between stress and anxiety, however it's really hard to spot the difference and I hope through this post, you'll be able to understand it better and take action if you or someone you know is showing these signs.
Constantly feeling Low & Tired: The feeling of not getting out of bed, no interest in doing any kind of physical work on a regular basis. Feeling low and tired sometimes is completely normal however if this happens to you every single day or for some days in continuity without any particular reason. If you feel tired as soon as you wake up, this may be your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, pay close attention to your pattern as this is one of the main symptoms of being in depression.
Lack of Focus & Concentration : Studies says that when you’re depressed your concentration suffers big time, decision making seems like a big task even if it’s as small as placing food orders. You tend to forget important things and have trouble remembering names and other details. You starts to avoid talking to people as it’s hard for you to focus on what they’re saying, you become more of a ‘Please Text me if urgent’ kind of a person just to avoid getting yourself in such situations.
Self doubt and drop in self confidence: There’s a drastic shift in your self-esteem, you might start seeing yourself not good enough or useless. You’ll constantly overthink about your past failures and all the mistakes you’ve made, and stress about your current condition and resonate all of that with it. The condition deteriorates further when you starts to be get suicidal thoughts because you feel worthless all the times. But please remember that no body is perfect in this world and we’re all flawed. Talk to someone you trust and share how you feel, you’ll definitely feel better.
Troubled Sleepingpattern Another significant change that happens to a person suffering from depression is a change in sleeping pattern, it’s either too much or not at all. In most cases people crave for more sleep even after a full nights rest or become insomniac. You’d feel drained and want to stay in bed all day, and it’s not like you want to binge watch your favorite show or have some quality me-time, it’s the complete opposite when your body is at rest and have no energy but your mind is alert and constantly thinking about random things happening in your life.
Change in body weight You’ll notice a visible change in your physical appearance, and the main thing that depression affect is your weight. It could either be up by several kilos or drastically down. You’d feel starved all the time even if you’ve just finished your meal. Your eating habits become unstable you’d either eat too much or nothing at all.
Nothing makes you happy Your favorite song, food, place or even a person, nothing seems to please you or bring that smile on your face, you don’t feel excited to do anything anymore. Following your passion feels like a waste of time and energy. You’d avoid going out and meeting people and get socially awkward at parties or public gatherings.
Severe Mood Swings: Depressed people aren’t always sad but they do suffer from major mood swings, at one point they’re happy and bubbly and just in a fraction of a second they’ll be sad anxious or irritated and you probably can’t even explain why, and if someone tries to ask you about it you either starts to cry or lash out with anger. You experience lack of tolerance and it feels like everything and everyone annoys you, sometimes it results in panic attacks.
Please Note: Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience a few symptoms, some many. I urge you to reach out to seek for Help if you notice more than 3 of these signs for a constant period of time. Always remember #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay and you're not alone, don't shy away in talking about it either to your family, friends or maybe a stranger. Keeping it inside and letting it build up can cause much more damage than expected. There's so much information available online, exercises to get out of depression. Trust me, I am talking with my own experience, we often restrict ourselves from talking about it, sharing our feelings and being vulnerable. Good mental health is as important as good physical health, it's time we start focusing on that.
I hope this post was helpful, Please let me know if you'd like me to talk about it in more details? I would love to.
